A light stomach travels better than a full one or an empty one. What we do on the road, and what to do the night before.

Travel sickness in dogs and cats is mostly a matter of timing, not of diet. The animal that struggles is usually the one that ate a full meal an hour before setting off.
The night before
Feed normally. Do not change the food: a new diet plus a long drive is two upsets at once, and you will not know which one caused what.
The morning of collection
A small breakfast, about a third of the usual amount, three to four hours before we arrive. Water as normal, right up until we leave.
On the road
- Water at every stop, from a bowl the animal already knows if you can send one
- Nothing to eat for the first few hours, until the animal has settled
- A small meal in the evening if the journey runs over a day
- Whatever your vet has prescribed, given at the times you tell us
Send the food your pet already eats, in a labelled bag, enough for the journey plus a day. A change of diet on arrival, in a new house, in a new country, is more than most animals want to deal with in one week.
